A romantic castle often in the forefront of Scottish history since it was built in the 12th century.  It stood as a magnificant fortress-residence for 400 years but was badly damaged during Cromwell's siege of 1650.  The renowned gardens include an attractive domed dovecote, an Arts and Crafts herbaceous border and Victorian garden. Having boasted a garden probably since its earliest days as a medieval fortified residence, today it is a colourful blend of traditional formal gardens and more contemporary plantings.  The herbaceous border has been authenticated by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's longest.
