The Royal Mile

The Royal Mile sits at the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.  It is probably the oldest street in Edinburgh and today there are four sections of the Mile; Castlehill, Lawnmarket, the High Street and Cannongate.  With the Castle at its head and the Palace of Holyroodouse at its foot, the street has formed processional routes for kings and queens over the last 500 years.  The Royal Mile has retained many historic buildings that can still be visited; Gladstone's Land (a perfectly preserved 17th century tenement), the Writer's Museum, Mary King's Close, the John Knox House and the Museum of Edinburgh.  To get a real taste of the past though, you can explore the many closes and wynds, the narrow passageways that line the Royal Mile.  Here in places like Riddle's Court, Tweedale Court, Bakehouse Close and Dunbar's Close you will step back in time to the old city.
